Soap land plot lines tend to be anything but merry around the festive period and the mould is not set to be broken in Weatherfield.

The New Year will begin with disaster, as a mini-bus crash leaves Coronation Street residents fighting for their lives.

The dramatic storyline is set be filmed before Christmas and will be screened at the start of 2015.

There are few details about the accident but it has been revealed that Steve McDonald, played by Simon Gregson, will be driving the Street Cars vehicle.

The passengers will be staff members from Underworld, who are setting off on a work outing.

A number of characters will be hospitalised following the crash, with one individual in a particularly critical condition.

A source on set told the Mirror: “They might have a happy Christmas on screen but most of the families will be rocked by this disaster early in 2015.”

Locations are still being scouted for the smash but, wherever it’s filmed, it certainly won’t be a Happy New Year on the Street.
