Fargo season 3 cast: Carrie Coon is new female lead

The Leftovers star will join Ewan McGregor for the third season of FX's anthology show

A new season of FX's anthology show Fargo inevitably means new stars.

Following news Ewan McGregor is set to feature in the upcoming season 3, The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed Carrie Coon will join him as female lead. Star of HBO's The Leftovers, her TV work has already earnt her a Critics' Choice Award for best actress in a drama series back in 2015; putting her in good stead to deliver something on par to previous stars Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, and Martin Freeman.

She's set to play Gloria Burgle, a practical soul who's both the chief of police in Edna Valley and a newly divorced mother, struggling to understand the modern world and its obsession with technology; a role which seems to spiritually echo that played by Frances McDormand in the classic Coen Brothers' film Fargo, from which the show takes its name (and world).

McGregor will take on the dual roles of brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy; the former the self-made Parking Lot King of Minnesota, and the latter a parole office who peaked in high school. Showrunner Noah Hawley revealed the brothers' rivalry would prove the catalyst to the show's events; stating, "There is an old wound between them that sort of gets reopened and re-litigated, and that rivalry becomes contentious and that sort of puts all the events in motion."

"The fun soup of it is you have to have enough moving parts that everything is on a collision course, but which parts are going to collide? There’s this element of randomness to it, which I think adds to the truthiness of our fake true story. So, it starts with Ewan and Ewan as brothers. It’s not as big character-wise a story as the second year, but I’m really excited about it."

Production on Fargo is set to begin later this year with an aim for a 2017 launch on FX.
