Gavin and Stacey Christmas special trailer

Gavin & Stacey fans have wondered for some time about character Nessa’s (Ruth Jones) age, with a number of hints dropped over three series, and now the Christmas special.

Now one viewer thinks they may have worked it out. In a Facebook post on a fansite for the popular BBC sitcom, they pointed out that Nessa actually reveals the age difference between her and Stacey (Joanna Page).

“I think I’ve worked out how old Nessa is,” Isobel Newman wrote. “She [Nessa] said in the Christmas special that when Stacey was 17, she was around 35 (if I’m remembering correctly).

“This means that she is 18 years older than Stacey when the show first started, it says that both Gavin and Stacey are 26, meaning Nessa was 44 at the start.

“Add 10 years onto that, and now she’s 54, meaning she’s around the same age as Bryn. Please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m just using the information I’ve got from the show and behind the scenes.”

While other fans said this estimate was out by a couple of years, most seemed to agree that this meant Nessa was in her mid-fifties.

Ruth Jones has hinted that more episodes of Gavin & Stacey could be on the way, after an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the Christmas special.

The show ended on a cliffhanger after Nessa was shown proposing to Smithy (James Corden), with whom she has a son. The scene cut to the credits before his answer was revealed.

It's been revealed that the reunion episode has become the most-watched TV show of the decade, with just one week to go until 2020. Read our review here.
