Joanna Lumley has revealed she was held at gunpoint while filming a travel series in Haiti.

The 73-year-old former Absolutely Fabulous star was driving through a mountain range with her film crew when the attack occurred.

After being told to hand over her money and threatened with death, Lumley was able to escape unharmed following intervention from her bodyguards.

Lumley said: "Suddenly there was a blockage across the road. They'd put branches down. Luckily, we had two big bodyguards who got out and said: 'Come on guys, clear this away.'

"And they went: 'No, we want your money or your life.' Sometimes they dig trenches, pour oil in and set fire to it, then come with guns and take your wallets."

An ITV spokesperson said that "a full risk assessment was carried out before filming in Haiti and Joanna was accompanied by the appropriate levels of security".

The programme Lumley was filming is a two-part documentary called Joanna Lumley's Hidden Caribbean: Havana To Haiti, which airs on ITV Monday 9 March.
