Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown deletes his Twitter following Sean Spicer controversy

He had previously earned backlash after claiming that Spicer, Trump’s former White House communications director, was a 'sweet guy'

Queer Eye star Karamo Brown has deleted his Twitter account, following days of blowback over his claims that Sean Spicer, the former communications director for Donald Trump, is a “good guy”.

Both men were this week announced as contestants on Dancing with the Stars, the US version of Strictly Come Dancing, with Spicer’s involvement immediately drawing criticism.

Asked to comment on Spicer by Entertainment Tonight, Brown said he was “most excited to meet him,” adding: “The thing is that people would look at us and think that we’re polar opposites, but I’m a big believer that if you can talk to someone and meet in the middle, you can learn about each other and help each other both grow.

"And so we have been chatting all day today. He’s a good guy. Really sweet guy.”

Brown’s statement was subsequently condemned across Twitter, with figures including author Roxane Gay tweeting to him, “Get a f***ing grip," adding: “There is no friendship with people who enable fascism.”

When prominent freelance journalist Evan Ross Katz embedded the clip alongside a tweet reading, “Because what’s morality, right?” Brown tweeted back (in since deleted tweets): “I honestly can’t stand people like you who post things like this just to flame the fire and get a reaction. We [the cast of Queer Eye] fight harder than your ass ever has for people of colour and members of the LGBTQIA community.”

Brown then reportedly blocked several prominent queer writers, activists and performers who had criticised him, including Katz, comedian Phillip Henry, LGBTQ activist Eliel Cruz and drag performer Marti Gould Cummings.

Brown has now deleted his Twitter account, with many using the news as an opportunity to snark. “Karamo deleted his Twitter,” wrote social media personality @missunitedface, “guess I won’t get to sit down w/him and engage in a respectful conversation.”
