Marge and Homer Simpson finally speak out about the divorce rumours

The couple finally dispelled the social media rumours that had been swirling since writer Al Jean said they would be "legally separating"

Marge and Homer Simpson have released their first official statement after rumours were spread that they could be getting a divorce in the near future.

Whispers of an impending breakup began swirling earlier this month, after Al Jean, one of the original writers of the show, said that things could soon be ending for Marge and Homer.

When asked what viewers could look forward to in the new series in an interview with Variety, he said: "Homer and Marge legally separate, and Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who's voiced by Lena Dunham."

In that instant, Simpsons fans all over the world cried out in unison, seeing it as yet another nail in the coffin of the classic show.

Confusion reigned after Al Jean clarified his comments on Twitter, saying that while what he said was correct, it was also "completely misinterpreted."

Fortuntely, things have been cleared up for good with a message straight from the horses' mouths.

Marge and Homer, sitting below a banner emblazoned with the words 'together forever', make it clear that they love each other very much and have no intention of divorcing. Aww.

In yet another bombshell from the Variety interview, Jean also said that Sideshow Bob will return, and will do something "he's wanted to do for 25 years" - namely, kill Bart. There's yet to be a similar clarification on the spiky-haired character's fate.

More depressing for the fans than character deaths or divorces, however, is the continued existence of the show, which many claim has gone quickly downhill since the Golden Years of the 1990s.

Other than dispelling some social media murmurs, the couple's announcement suggests that the show will go on for at least another few years.
