Shadowy conspiracies, intense paranoia; it's all coming back as the critically-acclaimed Mr. Robot returns to screens for its second season.

A big hit for network USA, season one saw Rami Malek's programmer-turned-hacker Elliot form the centre of a tense, moody narrative which submerged him into the world of hacktivism, all while facing the battle of his own depression and anxiety; with the network now announcing season two will launch 13 July (via Variety).

Malek returns for the new season, alongside Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, and new cast member Craig Robinson; Slater had previously won the Golden Globe for supporting actor for his role as the mysterious leader behind the secretive hacker group fsociety.

There's certainly a lot the upcoming episodes will have to answer for; what's next for fsociety, after they've apparently achieved their world-altering objective? Who was knocking at Elliot's door just before the final credits?

The show appears to be continuing in its exploration of extremely prescient themes, with reports the new season will deal with the encryption and privacy debate. Whatever's in store, creator Sam Esmail has promised it gets; "Dark. It gets really f***ing dark. I mean really dark."
