It’s been nearly 20 years since My Best Friend’s Wedding set the romcom standard and only now is the hit movie is getting a TV sequel.

The producers behind the 1997 film are joining forces with US network ABC to ride the nostalgia wave and make a follow-up series based on what happened next, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Ron Bass is returning to co-write the script and the original producers are also involved, so this does actually stand a chance of being good, but that doesn’t mean fans want to see their imaginations second-guessed at on telly.

The 30-minute comedy is going to pick up where things left off, following Julianne Potter as she explores New York with her bessie pal George. How the team plans to update it remains unknown, but there will probably be some iPads thrown in there a la Bridget Jones's Baby, to convince us that it now really is the 21st century.

Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett are not expected to return, probably partly because the current trend for reboots and remakes has not proved universally popular.

There is already a revival of The Notebook in the pipeline, with The X-Files and Prison Break also making comebacks. Add those to the deluge of Disney live-action projects and it’s only a matter of time until everybody gets bored.
