Nicolas Cage turned down the opportunity to cameo in season two of Netflix series Master of None, it has ben revealed.

The actor is the centre of one of season two's most memorable jokes - he's the star of the fake movie Death Castle - which features in the standout episode 'New York, I Love You.'

Aziz Ansari, who co-created the series alongside Alan Yang, reveals that they attempted to get the Hollywood actor to lend his voice to the film which can be heard off-screen in the episode's final scene.

“I think we did go out to Cage and quickly received a ‘…no,'” IndieWire reports Ansari as stating at an LA screening earlier this week.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg voiced Cage instead. Also 'starring' in Death Castle - the film which acts as the episode's through line - is Emma Watson and Fast & Furious actor Tyrese Gibson.

The episode is notable for featuring a completely silent segment starring two deaf characters using only sign language.

Master of None's first two seasons are available to watch on Netflix.
