The Rugrats are making a comeback.

Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures have announced a major relaunch of their Rugrats franchise, set to include both a new animated-series revival of 26 episodes, alongside a live-action film featuring CGI characters, Variety reports.

Both will see the return of the main crew of loveable tots: Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie and Angelica; though new characters will also be introduced.

Original creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain are also all on board. The film will be written by David Goodman, with a release date set for 13 November 2020.

“Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures,” said Sarah Levy, COO of Viacom Media Networks and interim president of Nickelodeon.

“What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.”

Rugrats certainly isn't the first Nickelodeon classic to receive a revival: Blue's Clues is set to return in the near future, with an all-new Hey Arnold! special airing last year, with specials also planned for Rocko's Modern Life and Invader Zim.

Production is already underway, though the air date and casting will be announced in the coming months.
