Star Trek: new show won't be set in J.J. Abrams' rebootiverse

The show will roll out as an anthology set at pinpoints in the original, classic timeline of the television series

Get ready for those timelines to muddle even further; the new Star Trek TV show will be going old school, severing all ties with J.J. Abrams' rebootiverse.

Birth.Movies.Death is reporting that CBS All Access' new series, guided by Bryan Fuller, will be set in the show's original universe. Specifically, the show will actually be an anthology, with the first series taking place at some point after the events of the 1991 film Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country; marking the space between the original series and The Next Generation.

Unfortunately, that timeline likely rules out the chance for cameos from previous crew members; most of the original characters had died by that point in the timeline, and actors from The Next Generation will likely now be too old to appear. So don't get your hopes up for a surprise appearance from the likes of William Shatner or Patrick Stewart; though a fresh start might be exactly what a new TV series needs to really distinguish itself from its predecessors.

Furthermore, rumours are the show won't be set on the Enterprise, likely giving the show a very distinct look of its own. One thing Fuller will have to tackle, however, is the source of the series' villains; at this point, the Khitomer Conference has seen peace descend between Klingons and humans. The show may then have to look elsewhere for its baddies, though rumours do suggest Klingon villains may still be worked into the show somehow.

Rebootiverse fans will still get their fill (and more), when Star Trek Beyond hits UK cinemas 22 July. ​​
