The OA: Netflix releases trailer for mystery new series, nobody has a clue what it's about

The sci-fi horror drama psychological thriller (who knows?) lands this Friday

"Have you seen a death? Have you seen darkness? Have you seen the light?" - all questions that ominously peppered Netflix's Twitter account on Monday (12 December) preceding the news that a mysterious new TV series will be dropping this coming Friday (16 December).

The series is called The OA, and is thje latest project from Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling who stars in the lead role as Prairie Johnson, a blind girl who went missing in her 20s. Only now she's returned and her sight's been restored - and she refuses to talk to anybody about her disappearance, including her parents and the FBI.

Batmanglij - who has directed all eight episodes - is the filmmaker behind Sound of My Voice and The East, two psychological thrillers that The OA looks to take influence from.

With its simmering sci-fi horror undertones, this could very much be the sleeper hit cut from the same cloth as Stranger Things which rocked the streaming service earlier on this year (and earned a Golden Globe nomination yesterday).

The series co-stars Emory Cohen (Saoirse Ronan's boyfriend in Brooklyn), former Walking Dead actor Scott Wilson (he played Hershel) and British actor Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter's Lucius Malfoy). Rogue One actor Riz Ahemed - who earned a Golden Globe nomination for his work in The Night Of - is set to make a cameo appearance.

Considering Netflix has so many TV projects on the horizon, it makes sense for bosses to play around with the format of announcing projects; with its element of mystery, The OA looks like the perfect series to 'do a JJ Abrams' with.
