The Walking Dead season 7 episode 3 'The Cell': Everything you should know

It's a very scared-looking Daryl's turn in the spotlight

Somewhat reassuringly, last week's episode of The Walking Dead - in which we caught up with Morgan (Lennie James), Carol (Melissa McBride) and new character King Ezekiel (Khary Payton) - was less traumatic than the season 7 opener.

Episode three will catch up with Daryl Dixon for what feels like the first time in a long time; te last we saw of him was watching on in anguish as he inadvertently caused the death of poor Glenn (Steven Yeun).

Now, as a prisoner of malevolent antagonist Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), what's in store for everyone's favourite crossbow-wielding redneck? Let's assess.

When's it on?

What's it called?

This week's installment is called 'The Cell' which we're assuming is more literal than last week's title ('The Well') which held more of a symbolistic weight.

What can we expect?

Daryl as we've never seen him before

Daryl - one of The Walking Dead's few remaining original characters - is in a dark place. So says actor Normand Reedus, anyway. Not that we're surprised - in essence, he's to blame for the tragic death of Glenn at the hands of Negan who's now his captor. The Saviours' leader now has Rick at his disposal, so Daryl knows nobody's coming to save him either. Add all of this together and the sturdy Daryl is something we've never truly seen him be before: terrified.

Dwight to get some characterisation

Right up until now, the character of Dwight (Austin Amelio) been the worst kind of villain; the unthreatening minion who's committed horrible acts (killed Denise, stolen Daryl's motorcycle, etc.) but, judging by clips of what's to come, it seems Dwight's about to be fleshed out. It even looks as if he may be Daryl's only hope, seeming to ensure he stays in Negan's good books by following the rules he seems to have in place.

Sherry

Remember the season 6 episode where Daryl first ran into Dwight and the two female Saviours who'd absconded from Negan (a move that got Dwight that painful-looking burn wound on his face)? The surviving one, Sherry (Christine Evangelista), is back: "Go back while you can," she warns. "Whatever he's done, there's more." This is evidently a warning that Negan's brutality knows no limits. We're hoping her words aren't foreshadowing anything that'll take place in the following week's newly-announced feature-length episode...

More Negan

After a week's hiatus, we'll be catching up with the man himself again this weekend with the episode heading to the Saviours' home turf, the Sanctuary this week (the place that'll soon be dishing out tainted pork). It seems he'll be building upon the fear he instilled in the seasons premiere - look no further than the moment where Dwight pulls Daryl to his knees as a mark of respect to their leader.

...but no Rick

The Walking Dead continues in the UK at 9pm on FOX
