The mark of a TV show's success is usually measured (sometimes unfairly so) by its viewing ratings. At other times, it's by the feverish online fanbase; The Walking Dead has both in droves. To further solidify the AMC drama's popularity, it's been handed it's very own theme park attraction.

Universal Studios Hollywood has developed the walk-through with the assistance of figures behind the hit series, including KNB EFX - the LA-based special effects studio who provide the series with its zombies.

The show's executive producer, director and special effects maestro Greg Nicotero said: “After six years of working on The Walking Dead, we have a great opportunity to take it out of the studio, off the soundstage and into an attraction where guests can come face-to-face with walkers."

“It’s very exciting to be able to make the attraction as authentic as possible," he continued. "We’re getting the chance to utilise moulds that were created specifically for the show and translate them into parts of the attraction. We’re creating animatronic walkers that guests will be able to see … it’s never been done before.”

Dedicated fans of the AMC zombie series will recognise sets and specific walkers that have appeared throughout its first six seasons.

The Walking Dead's sixth season drew to a close in controversial fashion earlier on this year. It's hotly anticipated season seven will begin airing this October. Earlier this week, Nicotero took part in a Reddit AMA where he dropped some bombshells abut the future of the show which is currently the biggest series in cable television's history.

You can visit the year-round attraction when it opens 4 July. Universal has stated that, due to the intense nature, it isn't permitted for anyone under the age of 13.
