TV Choice Awards 2013 - Battle of the Doctors: David Tennant beats Matt Smith to best actor

Doctor Who and Broachurch won two awards each

David Tennant won a TV Choice Award for his role as DI Alec Harding in Broadchurch last night, beating Doctor Who star Matt Smith.

Broadchurch star Olivia Colman was also nominated for best actress, but lost out to Miranda Hart who won for her portrayal of ‘Chummy’ in Call the Midwife.

Broadchurch won for best new drama at the awards- which were voted for by the public- beating The Fall, Mr Selfridge and Ripper Street.

Doctor Who won an outstanding contribution award and a gong for best drama series, staving off competition Donwton Abbey, Call the Midwife and Waterloo Road.

It was also a successful night for Ant & Dec, whose three shows I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Britain’s Got Talent and Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway all won awards.

BBC sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys retained its title as best comedy.

Shane Richie and Michelle Keegan won awards for best soap actor and actress for their portrayals of Alfie Moon in EastEnders and Tina McIntyre in Coronation Street.
