Westworld actor Ed Harris criticises character’s season 3 storyline: ‘I didn’t sign on to play the Man in White’

‘This wasn’t the most joyous season for me,’ actor admitted in candid new interview

Ed Harris has seemingly criticised the latest season of Westworld in an interview discussing the latest episode.

The actor, who plays William/The Man in Black, was reflecting upon filming the scene featuring four versions of his character when he stated he wasn’t a fan of the third season’s trajectory.

Speaking to Vulture, Harris acknowledged that it was “kinda fun” getting to beat up the younger incarnation of his character, played by returning cast member Jimmi Simpson, saying: “It was fun to actually get a chance to work with him a little bit, even if it was a little bizarre.”

However, Harris doesn’t seem to be a particular fan of how the present version of his character’s story is playing out. After spending two seasons roaming the Westworld adventure park dressed all in black, he is now confined to an institution dressed all in white.

“You do what you gotta do,” he said, adding: “I mean, I signed on to play the Man in Black. I didn’t sign on to play the Man in White. So, it wasn’t the most joyous season for me, I gotta say.”

He also hinted that he finds it frustrating not knowing the full arc of the character he’s playing.

“[The showrunners] pretty much leave it up in the air,” he said, referring to Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

“Being a person who enjoys doing theatre and making it new and fresh every night, I’d just as soon know the full arc of my character. But, unfortunately, I do not.”

The series also stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Aaron Paul, Tessa Thompson and Jeffrey Wright.

Westworld airs in the US on HBO every Sunday and is shown in the UK the following day on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
