X Factor 2013: Kingsland Road sent home after Tamera Foster sing-off

Boy band Kingsland Road were voted off the X Factor tonight - with judge Gary Barlow complaining that the British public had “got it wrong”.

The London-based five piece ended up in the final two with Tamera Foster, one of the favourites to win the singing competition this year.

She looked shocked by being forced to sing for her survival on the ITV1 show, and could be seen being comforted by host Dermot O'Leary as she waited to perform.

The 16-year-old was shaking after her rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" - but it proved to be enough to ensure she would be saved by the judges. Only Barlow, who is mentoring the groups this year, opted to save Kingsland Road after they sang "I Won't Let You Go" by James Morrison.

Sam Callahan was named by three of the judges as their least favourite act of Saturday's disco-themed show, with Barlow saying he “hated” the teenager's performance of "Relight My Fire", which was a hit for his band Take That.

But the 19-year-old was the first to be told that he had sailed through to next weekend's big band night.

Only Louis Walsh, who is in charge of the boys' category, named another act as the worst of the week, saying he thought Kingsland Road should leave for their performance of Jackson 5 classic "Blame it on the Boogie".

It was the second time the band, named after the east London road they live near, had been in the sing-off, while it was the first time for Tamera, who has been touted as a possible winner of the whole contest. She had sung "Wishing on a Star" by Rose Royce on Saturday night, and was told by Sharon Osbourne that she had a voice “like velvet”.

Barlow addressed both acts after the results of the public vote, telling them: “Another shocker. This is two weeks running and I have to say it, the public have got it wrong tonight. Both of you don't deserve to be in the bottom two, you really don't.”

Walsh praised both acts but told Tamera she has “star quality” and deserved to stay.

After the announcement was made that Kingsland Road were leaving, Barlow said: “They're a hit band, and they will be a hit band in the future. I'm certain of it.

"I want to remind everybody out there this is a singing competition. That's all I have to say."

Members of the band looked emotional as they prepared to leave but vowed to carry on performing together.
