Upbeat: Panufnik plus
VISITORS to the Queen Elizabeth Hall for the Panufnik Memorial Concert tomorrow week - just under a year after the Polish-born composer died in his adopted Twickenham - will find their musical experiences extended by that rare item, a free but compendious programme book. Photographs, anecdotes, and tributes have been collected by the Park Lane Group, the concert's promoter. Their sources range from Sir Georg Solti to Lech Walesa, and their offerings include, in Oliver Knussen's case, a sketch for woodwind and piano written as an immediate response. The evening's music includes excerpts from Arbor Cosmica; two of his concertos, played by the violinist Krzysztof Smietana and the percussionist Evelyn Glennie, and the premiere of a piece from the next generation - Roxanna Panufnik's Virtue.
