I agree totally with both Sir David and Martin Maudsley. Policies on Climate Change and Recyling by adults will be of no use if we don't begin today to nurture babies' and children's bond with nature. Our babies and children are being assessed at far too early an age - from six months - with disastrous results. We are alienating them from their own true nature and from the natural world which is home to all of us. It is important that those of us who love and care for the natural world begin now to remedy this trend. As Sir David points out the future of the environment is in danger of children are not given the opportunity to bond with nature from the beginning.

It seems to me that the issue is one of values before the consequent behaviour. As a society we have laws on many things but the spirit of the times seems to be that these are barriers to circumvent. If we were to engage young minds on such things as the naming of animals at an early age, reward the successful demonstration, and somehow make the process fun then we might succeed a bit better. In addition the parents somehow need to be part of any such process. Nay sayers will moan about social engineering, but heck, going to school is social engineering.

Changing values about the worth of simple knowledge is a long term process....but I remember the way the Archers was used to propagandise rural communities, why not the Simpsons or Dangermouse or whatever it is that the kids love to see?
