2018 Canadian Grand Prix: Vettel seizes pole

Sebastian Vettel starts the Canadian Grand Prix on pole position as he looks to claw back the 14-point lead that rival Lewis Hamilton holds in the Drivers’ Championship, but an unpredictable race in Montreal could well see a shock or two arrive on Sunday evening.

With Hamilton down in fourth, Vettel can make up serious ground in the battle to become a five-time world champion, though just 0.232 seconds covers the top four with Valtteri Bottas in second and the fast Red Bull of Max Verstappen in third. With Daniel Ricciardo, two-time winner this season, down in sixth with Kimi Raikkonen fifth, and the Circuit Gilles Villeneueve one of the easiest tracks to overtake on in the calendar, a thrilling race is on the cards.

Hamilton though has pedigree around this track, and should he triumph today he will tie Michael Schumacher with seven Canadian Grand Prix victories.

Lap 5: A hairy moment for Perez! He slides off at turn one after making contact with Sainz, with a heavy contact between them. He tries to hold it and slide back across the track before collecting it in the middle of turn two, and Alonso slips through to take 11th. That's three early positions for the McLaren driver.

Lap 5: The stewards are looking into the collision between Sainz and Perez, while the one between Stroll and Hartley will be looked at after the race.

Lap 7: Finally DRS is enabled following the early safety car, but Vettel already has a healthy 1.8s lead out in front. Bottas is not so lucky, with Verstappen right behind him and in DRS range.

Lap 8: Hamilton having early issues, he reports "drop-outs of power", although at the moment he's still keeping pace with Verstappen. Is there anything to worry about?

Lap 9: Alonso is all over the back of Leclerc and has a go around the outside into turn one. It's no good as he gets a bit loose, but this is already the best battle on the track. Hulkenburg is also on the back of Ocon, who jumped the Renault at the start.

Lap 10: Perez pits and puts on the supersofts in a change of strategy, which drops him to last. Can he got all the way on those tyres though? It's a mammoth 60 laps to the chequered flag.

Lap 11: Fastest lap of the race for Vettel with a time of 1:15.475. it's one of the shortest lap times of the season in Montreal, and with most of that at full throttle, fuel may be an issue for one or two come the end of the race.

Lap 12: The first of the regular stoppers is Ocon as he dives into the pits, releasing the two Renaults. It's a slow stop with an issue with the rear jack, and he comes out down in 15th. The stewards also confirm that there will be no further action against Sainz or Perez.

Lap 13: Another fastest lap for Vettel and he's pulled the pin, building a gap of four seconds already. Bottas is trying to up the pace, and Verstappen is now 2.9s off second place with the hypersofts already looking cooked.
