Rockstar has released trailers that show each of the three main characters from Grand Theft Auto 5.

The new game is set in Los Santos, and the videos showing the backgrounds of the central trio help to build a picture of what to expect before the game is released.

Michael: A retired criminal who wants to be a good dad, is seeking a new life. His son says he's having a mid-life crisis. But his therapist says he's "addicted to chaos". Michael says: "I'm rich, I'm miserable - I'm pretty average for this town".

Franklin: To the music of Jay Rock's 'Hood Gone Love It', we see Franklin being lectured about not being a good enough gangbanger, and a friend responding "that's all we got. That's our heritage". His trailer is littered with scenes of him being chased by police and in strip clubs. Told he has no respect, Franklin responds: "I got respect for reality".

Trevor: Described as a "major drug dealer, real hillbilly type shit", Trevor is shown in a variety of scenes to demonstrate how unhinged he is: "Bring me my coffee or I'm gonna cut your arm off". Someone begging "please, just go and ruin somebody else's home furnishings" and admitting "I have abandonment issues. I see a shrink once a week." He also pushes someone out of a helicopter and demands a massage from another. He sums up the three trailers when he says: "Things could get really messy."

The latest announcement from the GTA development team said that Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013, fours months later than originally planned.

The first major previews of the game will be released tomorrow.
