Pikmin, Nintendo's much-loved surrealist strategy video game series, is to be turned into a short film by talismanic Nintendo developer Shiergu Miyamoto.

Prosaically named Pikmin Short Movie, the film was born out of content Miyamoto wasn't able to use in the games but still wanted to explore.

It will be made using CG and shown in the 3D, with there being no word on a run time yet though it will consist of three episodes called 'Midnight Juice', 'The Treasure Inside the Bottle' and 'One Tough Day'.

The gameplay of Pikmin and its sequels revolved around recovering ship parts by utilising different comnbinations of coloured Pikmin in tandem.

Pikmin Short Movie gets its premiere next month at Tokyo International Film Festival.

In other nostalgic Nintendo news, a new Star Fox game for the Wii U has been firmed up for a 2015 release.

Miyamoto has taken the game under his wing, which has yet to be given a title and will be the first since Star Fox Assault on the GameCube.
