British tourism authority VisitBritain has launched an app that showcases iconic British filming locations on-the-go.

The app allows users with location-aware iPod Touch and iPhones to discover and photograph the famous movie locations around them, featuring iconic titles such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Da Vinci Code, Harry Potter or Mary Poppins.

Users can plan an entire cinema tour, plotting the location on Google Maps and reading detailed synopses of the films. Users can also take their own pictures on location or make their own short films to post to Twitter, YouTube or Facebook. Research from VisitBritain suggests that 40 percent of visitors would be very likely to visit locations they have seen in films or on television.

"The message is clear, wherever you are in the UK you are never far from a British film location. The app gives visitors the opportunity to recreate their favourite scenes from some of our most iconic British films," said Justin Reid of VisitBritain.

The film also features locations from the new Sherlock Holmes movie, which was released over Christmas in the US and UK but will launch in France and Switzerland on February 3 and Japan on March 12.
