Tea on the third day (Somerset won toss)

Play has been called off the day here after a frustrating day of proposed starts and inconvenient drizzle. From noon onwards the familiar voice of ground announcer Matt Proctor has been tantalising spectators in the crowd with the latest from the umpires' room: "If no further rain, play will start at... "

At one time there looked a genuine chance that Lancashire's last-wicket pair would be striding out at one o'clock but, in the usual way of things on days like these, the groundstaff had only to think about taking the covers off for the rain to begin again, never so heavy as to threaten an early abandonment but never quite drying up altogether.

As the players took tea early, the latest revised start time was 4.15pm and the men with the sawdust have been tending to the damper patches while the Somerset players warm up, clearly keen to claim that last wicket as soon as they can, with two and a quarter hours' cricket still possible. By 4pm, however, it was spitting again, at which point the umps gave up the ghost.
