White: 2000 Bin 66 Hilltop Gewürztraminer, £3.99, Sainsbury's

One of the best-value examples of Alsace's spiciest and most fragrant grape variety comes from the go-ahead Neszmely co-operative, in Hungary. With the grape's trademark exotic Turkish Delight fragrance and lychee spiciness, this clean, apéritif dry white comes up smelling, quite literally, of roses.

Red: 2000 TerraMater Zinfandel/Shiraz, £4.99, Safeway, Sainsbury's

The most recent release of this sweetly ripe, Rhône-style blend from Terramater Estates in Chile combines the peppery, aromatic qualities of zinfandel with the ripe, blackberryish fruitiness of the syrah grape in a juicy, brambly, thoroughly gluggable red for lazy summer afternoons and early evening barbecues.
