Time was when only a visit to a specialist offered up the prospect of spotting underlying health problems, but not any more.

Nowadays, busy schedules and overrun GP surgeries mean that a trip to your doctor isn’t always feasible but luckily, there are alternative ways to get a provisional health check-up.

Speaking to Today, Dr Natalia Azar said there is a simple 60-second test that could reveal all manner of hidden conditions from gum disease to gastric problems.

What’s more, it doesn’t require any fancy equipment; all you need is a spoon.

Simply take a spoon and rub its base over the entire surface of your tongue. Then place it inside a plastic bag and keep it under the sun or a bright light for one minute.

Now all that’s left to do is remove the spoon - without touching the base – and give it a whiff.

While Dr Azar says that most cases of bad odour are related to gum disease or tooth decay, more ominous smells could be a sign of a much larger health problem

She says that a fruity smell could be a sign of diabetes while an ammonia smell is likely to be related to kidney problems.

Other odours could also indicate gastric or lung problems.

A simple test that takes just 60-seconds, this spoon trick can reveal some surprising truths about the state of your health.

That being said, if you do have any serious concerns it’s important to follow up with your GP.
