Newcomers to the World Wide Web this week include Charter 88 and the British Open Golf Championship. Charter 88 launched its Web page (http://www.gn.apc.org/charter88.index.html) on 14 July - Bastille Day - proclaiming it as "the first UK attempt to use the Internet as a kickstart to political participation and a freeway for debate".

The slightly more sedate venue for the golf (at http://www.golfweb.com/) offers a variety of data about the championship, due to start at St Andrews this Thursday. Players' scorecards will be scanned in, and loaded on to the site.
