Army veteran Captain Tom Moore has become a household name after helping to raise more than £28m for the NHS.

The 99-year-old, who served in India and Burma during the Second World War, initially set out to raise £1,000 by completing 100 laps of his garden in Bedfordshire before his 100th birthday on 30 April.

However, Captain Moore finished his laps well ahead of time and surpassed his initial target by raising an incredible £28m for NHS Charities Together.

Following his amazing achievements, people from around the world have been looking for ways to pay tribute to Captain Moore, including a petition to get him a knighthood.

Others are wanting to celebrate the veteran’s 100th birthday by sending him cards, with tens of thousands already on their way.

If you would like to send Captain Moore a birthday card to mark the occasion and thank him for his fundraising efforts, here is everything you need to know.

Can birthday cards be sent to Captain Moore?

After receiving numerous requests from people wanting to send Captain Moore a birthday card, the veteran’s family asked their local Post Office if they could help provide an address.

Bill Chandi, post master at Marston Moretaine Post Office in Bedfordshire, happily volunteers to collect birthday cards for the veteran and pass them on.

However, the Post Office has since become so inundated with cards it has had to seek help from a local school.

Bedford School, which is attended by Captain Moore's grandson Benjie Ingram-Moore, has so far received more than 40,000 cards and employed a team of 20 volunteers to help open each one.

Can you design your own birthday card

People from around the world are sending Captain Moore cards ahead of his 100th birthday on 30 April (Bedford School)

To mark the occasion, the Post Office has created five card designs that people can print out and colour in to personalise and send to Captain Moore.

“Remember to write a special message inside the card to wish the amazing Captain Tom a very Happy Birthday,” the Post Office states.

Can you send Captain Moore a virtual birthday card?

If you are unable to get to your local Post Office, you can also send Captain Moore a virtual birthday message using the hashtag #makeacardfortom.

The hashtag was created by eight-year-old Reegan Davies, from Port Talbot, South Wales, who set a target of 1,500 virtual cards after posting a video online to thank him for his fundraising efforts.

“You’ve got to make a birthday card for Tom, any social media you post it, and tag #makeacardfortom,” Davies said in the video.

Children and adults alike around the world have since been getting involved and sharing their cards for Captain Moore online.
