The Mamas and the Papas with Peter Sarstedt, Fairfield Hall Croydon (0181-688 9291)

I guess it's no fun being a one-hit wonder. Maria Muldaur privately admitted that she never, ever liked "Midnight at the Oasis", but she has spent her career living it down. One wonders what Peter Sarstedt thinks about his similar moment of fame with Where Do You Go To My Lovely which centred around Marie Claire who talked like Marlene Dietrich and danced like Zizi Jeanmaire. (No, they really don't write them like that anymore.) You can find out tonight when he shares the bill with The Mamas and the Papas. OK, so it's not the real Sixties singing group. How could it be? Mama Cass choked on a ham sandwich and died over 20 years ago. Still, we're assured that Papa John Phillips has handpicked the new members who will sing their way through the surprisingly tart and complex harmonies of such classics as Monday, Monday and Dedicated to the One I Love.
