Last year was fundamental in the revival of blue makeup both on and off the runway. But, it looks like it’s here to stay.

Cobalt, sapphire, aquamarine and azure; if the spring runways were anything to by, a stand-out blue wash is the only colour to wear on your eyes this season.

Depending on your age, the thought of swiping the shade over your lids might conjure memories of bygone dance recitals or Bowie’s 1970s Life on Mars video.

But, fear not because while the vogue for blue eye makeup undoubtedly serves up a heavy dose of nostalgia, it has also seen a coming of age.

This time round, more contemporary hues and a lean towards more bold shapes are making way for a seriously graphic gaze.

On the runway, the hue appeared in a myriad of styles; the most unexpected of which came from Victoria Beckham.

A typically sharp designer, this season Beckham’s collection befitted a more relaxed women – the dressed were looser and pants baggier – and the makeup look followed suit.

Here, makeup artists created three looks using products from Beckham’s collection with Estee Lauder. One of which saw models sporting cobalt blue graphic eyes with painterly, smoked-out flicks.

Other risky iterations could be seen at Maison Margiela with blue glitter exaggerated wings, at Nina Ricci with turquoise glossy lids and a dicey pairing of blue eyeshadow and bold red lips at Vanessa Seward.

A trend that requires a little nerve, donning a blue eye can be worn several ways but the bravest among you should dive straight in with a wash of punchy shadow and lashings of doll-like mascara.

For the more cautious subtle blue-green shades are easier to wear, especially in shimmery shades.

Or you can try switching out classics like black liner or mascara for a bright blue shade instead; just be sure to pair with fresh skin and barely-there base.
