Brooke Shields reveals she finally feels confident enough to wear a bikini at 53

The actress and model wants to set a good example for her daughter

Brooke Shields has opened up about regaining her body confidence in her 50s, having previously felt too insecure to wear a bikini.

The 53-year-old actress and model had become increasingly self-conscious in recent years, opting to wear long swimsuits when dressing for the beach.

However, she recently realised that doing so could be spreading a harmful message to her daughter about having a negative body image.

“I used to wear these bathing suits that practically came to my knees,” she told InStyle.

“My oldest daughter would say, ‘That makes you look so big and uncomfortable.’

“I realised I had to be confident in my skin to set the right example for her.”

Shields decided to start wearing bikinis again, displaying her rediscovered self-confidence in a series of photos on Instagram.

She explained that she’d felt especially proud to share the photos on Instagram having recently started a rigorous muscle-strengthening workout regime.

She’d begun the training in preparation for knee surgery, but it had also left her feeling stronger and more empowered.

In May, it was announced that Shields would be taking part in the Swimsuits For All “Power Suit” campaign, which champions women of all ages wearing different styles of swimwear.

In addition to Shields, the other individuals being featured in the campaign include 30-year-old model Ashley Graham, 67-year-old professional swimmer Pat Gallant Charette, 37-year-old nurse practitioner Katie Duke and 30-year-old reality star Angela Simmons.

“Growing up under scrutiny led me to feel insecure about my looks,” Shields said in a statement from the brand provided to Harper’s Bazaar.

“And now, after 50 years in the spotlight, I can confidently say that my ‘Power Suit’ is being in my own skin, showing my body and not hiding it."
