Red Valentino soaked up the Beach Boys vibe for spring/summer 2017

At this time of year it’s not unusual for nautical garb to rear its seafaring head but while it remains an unwavering fashion favourite, it’s a look that can get a little boring.

Luckily, this season it’s time dock tradition in favour of lines that pack a little more punch.

Ripped from beach umbrellas, deck chairs and beach huts, this new set of seaside stripes are bright, cheery and full of fun factor.

Horizontal, vertical and of all shapes and sizes, the spring/summer collections were zinging with coastal verve and Red Valentino – the lower-priced label of sibling Valentino - soaked up the Beach Boys vibe.

There were deckchair stripes in red and white adorning boxy bowling shirts and short twin sets, two-tone crepe de Chine bomber jackets and airy crocheted midi skirts decorated with beach scenes - seagulls and all.

So too, Altuzarra took on the trend with stretchy fine knit dresses and co-ordinating frilly bloomers.

Meanwhile, Rosie Assoulin looked to childhood memories of a beach vacation setting with striped lurex sundresses, cotton separates and vivid fantasy hues in canary yellow, spring green and blue.

A trend that many women approach with hesitation, it’s important to remember that stripes can be flattering; you just need to find your direction.

If you’re looking to elongate go vertical, opt for diagonals to flatter a curvy figure or take on horizontal stripes to enhance a lean silhouette.

Either way, it’s perfectly okay not to dive in headfirst when it comes to bold stripes.

Instead, why not embrace seaside living by dipping in your toe with a classic Breton top; just be sure to keep an eye out for brighter hues.

Alternatively, nothing’s easier than throwing an on-trend handbag or stripy neck-tie for instant French-girl vibes.
