Right, I'm over the worst of it. Made it through the indignity of the pedicure. Toenails Shellac-ed. Even fake-tanned my feet. Summer-sandal me up!

Congrats. Although frankly you're kidding yourself on that last one – have another look at those heels – but not to worry, just keep your feet moving at all times during daylight. Your hard work will be rewarded with a cornucopia of options for liberating your toes.

Excellent. Gladiator sandals still fashionable?

The studded gladiator has become something of a perennial. Still, it's not quite what you'd call a classic style. If you're not going highly seasonal, I'd suggest something a little more along the timeless lines of Caravelle ankle-cuff flats from French brand K Jacques (above, £199, my-wardrobe.com). Reassuringly expensive-looking in neutral grey.

Not expensive-looking; expensive

True, one tends to follow the other. But there's nothing more uncomfortable than a badly made flat. Dropping all your cash on flashy heels is madness – nobody, to my knowledge, has invented a comfy 5in stiletto, but if you invest a bit more in your daytime flatties, you'll reap the reward in every step. With a less painful price tag, KG's Moment sandals are a nice utility style with a supportive flatform sole (sale price £39, hof.co.uk, available in black while stocks last).
