The best partywear for Christmas: Black-tie needn't mean boring - stand out from the crowd in sequins and statement jackets

When you're picking out your party wear this season, don't go back to basic black – instead stand out from a sea of penguin suits by opting for something a little more alternative. There’s plenty of inspiration to be had from the autumn/winter collections of Fendi, Prada and Saint Laurent.

Traditional smoking shapes come in rich reds and moody blues for an easy-to-wear update on the classic.

More adventurous souls might get the party started in pink lurex or sleek leather.

For more casual occasions, ditch the jacket altogether and go bold with the motif on your shirt instead.

For women, it’s not all about a little black dress this Christmas, shift dresses aren’t just for the office – Prada’s take this season is sheer, and trimmed with a shaggy shearling fringe which is tantalisingly tactile.

Statement sweatshirts are still a big story, and a hefty sprinkling of sparkle is no less than the season of goodwill deserves – keep things modern with an above the knee skirt and minimal jewellery.

For more traditionally elegant eveningwear a girl could hardly do better than turning to Lanvin where Alber Elbaz’ fluid and feminine work always has a distinctly contemporary edge.
