It’s starting to feel as though autumn has finally arrived: the persistent heatwave is dwindling, only to be replaced by blustery winds, drizzle and much cooler climes.

While some of you might not be ready to say goodbye to the dregs of summer, others will appreciate the sartorial sweeteners that come with the onset of autumn.

After all, what better way is there to cheer yourself up, stay warm and look seriously stylish all at the same time than by investing in some new season knitwear?

A key component of our winter wardrobes, knitwear is a must-have addition for those of us who have to brave the cold and, while it’s important to stay cosy and warm, there’s no excuse for not doing so in style.

Luckily, the autumn-winter 2018 runways were burgeoning with creative takes on these classic staples so, whether you prefer cute crops, crewnecks or cardigans, there’s an option for you.

Oversized

Knitted polo-neck jumper, £24.99, H&M

As seen at Carven and Loewe, you’ll find that this season bigger really is better, at least when it comes to the world of knitwear.

When looking for the perfect fit, try and find a style that’s wide cut and slightly longer at the back than it is at the front – a finish that makes them perfect for stylishly half-tucking into the waistband of your bottoms.

If you prefer a little more structure, look to add it in elsewhere with a thick funnel-like roll neck that will hold its shape and pair with wide-leg, tailored trousers.

Statement

Sequin flower sweater, £69.99, Zara

Just because it’s autumn, it doesn’t mean you have to give up on making a statement and this season there are so many options to choose from.

From brash and bold slogans to neon brights a la Balenciaga and graphic prints with stripes and animals – any of the above will prove a hit a with the fashion pack this fall.

Our favourite option though is the party knit. A piece that’s embellished with all manner of pretty, sparkly things – pearls, sequins or embroidery – they will look just as chic worn with a pair of jeans by day as they will tucked into a pleated skirt by night.

Fair Isle

Reverse Fair Isle Jumper, £42, Topshop

Another playful option, intarsia and Fair Isle jumpers are a great option for the cooler months.

Available in everything from shrunken, cropped styles to big knits that have been casually thrown over leggings, these styles are fun, festive and full of longevity.

We suggest taking your styling cues from the runways with this one where Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Erdem, who paired theirs with winter floral and sequin dresses for a quirky finish.

Cardigan

Camel chunky knit cardigan, £22.99, New Look

Believe it or not, cardigans have come in from the cold. No longer the reserve of grannies and librarians, the classic button up was spotted all over the catwalk this season signalling their sartorial comeback.

A great option for people who aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to their summer-worthy slip dresses and cami tops, you can repurpose your warm weather wardrobe by simply throwing a weighty cardigan over the top.

Alternatively, wear yours belted over a long sleeved midi dress and pair with knee-high boots or kick back in trainers and a slogan T-shirt.
