Emily won the award for two outstanding pieces on these pages last year: a profile of Frances Smith, the 'salad' lady who supplies many of our best restaurants with their greens, and the story of a cook who was being forced to give up her excellent and hygienic cake-making business as a result of new health regulations.
Joanna Blythman, a former winner of the Glenfiddich award, used to write for us from Edinburgh and now sends her perceptive and pertinent reports from her home base in Strasbourg. Sophie Grigson, recently named Food Writer of the Year by the Restaurateur's Association of Great Britain, joined us as cookery writer in February. Along with Anthony Rose, Michael Jackson, Keith Botsford and the Gastropod, they make the Independent's food pages compulsory reading.
A day with Sophie Grigson
Readers of the Independent can join Sophie Grigson for a special cookery demonstration day. She has chosen mouth-watering recipes with a Mediterranean theme, including Tarte Fine aux Tomates et Pistou, Pissaladiere and Tunisian Orange and Almond Cake.
The demonstrations take place in the modern cookery theatre of Gaggenau, the kitchen manufacturer, near Heathrow airport. Places are limited to 30 per day to allow everyone a good view and the chance to join in.
The demonstrations will be from 10.30am-3pm on Thursday 6 May, Saturday 8 May and Sunday 9 May. Tickets cost pounds 48 and include coffee on arrival, lunch with wine and recipe cards.
