Transferring the taste of beer into food form has always proved difficult, but one jelly bean company believes its new flavour has produced a winning formula.
The California-based Jelly Belly company announced the arrival of its new flavour 'Draft Beer' at the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco after revealing that consumers had specifically requested the new flavour for "decades."
With an enticing golden effect for its shell, the jelly bean's taste is related to a "Hefeweizen-inspired ale" to keep in touch with the company's German heritage.
“Usually the factory has a sweet and fruity aroma, but when we’re making this flavor it’s just like being in an ale house,” says Jeff Brown, vice president of manufacturing for Jelly Belly Candy Company.
The "effervescent and crisp flavor is packed in a golden jelly bean with an iridescent finish", according to the company. Beer connoisseurs will find the flavour profile to be clean with notes of wheat and a touch of sweetness. The aroma is mildly bready,” Jelly Belly said through a press release.
As well as releasing a beer-based bean, the company also debuted a selection of cocktail-inspired classics, including Pina Colada, Mai Tai and Strawberry Daiquiri.
However, those expecting a cheap substitute to replace your usual intake of Carlsberg or Fosters on an evening out will be disappointed, as the company insisted that the beans contain no alcohol whatsoever.
The Draft Beer beans are set to arrive in Britain in February.
