Ever caved in the top of a supermarket "pie" and thought, 'where the hell are my pastry sides and base?' Well this is the pedantic e-petition for you.

The motion 'Make wrongly describing a casserole with a pastry lid as a pie a criminal offence' has been submitted to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and has already drawn over 1,200 signatures.

The deceptive casseroles are a common trick of the supermarket fancy range, their oven dishes belying a distinct lack of pastry.

"For too long customers in pubs and restaurants have ordered what is described on the menu as a pie only to be served with casserole in a pot covered by a puff pastry lid," the petition rants.

"This is not a pie and is also curiously difficult to consume.

"A pie is defined by the OED as "A baked dish of fruit, or meat and vegetables, typically with a top and base of pastry."

"This petition urges the implementation of criminal sanctions upon the owners of food outlets that serve items described as pies without a pastry base. Exemptions will apply for Shepherds, Cottage and Fish Pies."

People concerned by the structure of pies might also be interested to learn that we've been eating chocolate biscuits upside down for years.
