Hot choc shock - since May Bath's been in the throes of an endorphin rush brought on by this branch of chocolatier James Hutchins' Bristol original. His beautiful chocolates and unusually flavoured bars (nutmeg, orange and geranium) are joined by cookies, tortes, cheesecakes and brownies baked at this shop and café. Succumb with a hot chocolate, milk shake, iced coffee or chocolate - or take home for deferred gratification.

Star Inn

Stellar village pub with its own cricket team, good beers and outstanding food - wood pigeon salad with pickled cherries and local kirsch - using ingredients from nearby. Under the same owners the village shop doubles as a traiteur (Yorkshire translation pending) selling local produce or the chef's own: pastries, terrines, soups; venison casserole and blanquette of lamb; ginger parkin and lemon tart; cheeses and chutneys; organic veg, poultry, and fresh fish. A gastronomic rural idyll.

Trevathan Farm Shop & Tearoom

Strawberries are grown, picked, turned into jam and served for cream teas - this enterprising Cornish family are diversified farmers. Ham, egg and chips, juicy children's burger, lamb chops with new potatoes, cakes and raspberries - they're all grown, reared or baked on the bountiful farm and eaten in the plain but airy tea room. Or pick the fruit yourself, and buy vegetables, fruit, beef and lamb, eggs and cheeses in the shop.

Truc Vert

This traiteur (the word works better in Mayfair), wine shop and restaurant is both delectable and useful. OK, it's not where you'll do the weekly grocery shop. But you can pick up patés, charcuterie and cheeses, wines, and salads and cakes - while lunching or dining on typically zesty assemblies like John Dory filled with grilled courgettes, aubergine and tomato salsa.
