FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

Sunglasses evoke a lot of my bile: people who wear them indoors/in clubs/anywhere where there's no sunlight are pretentious twats. The latest fad for wraparound sunglasses is one I hate, even though Sid Vicious was a fan of the style and I loved him. (They're still featured here because not everyone shares my view.) But, that said, sunglasses are essential when there's sunlight: they protect your eyes and they stop you squinting. Loads of designers are now making sunglasses and some of the best come from Calvin Klein and Dolce e Gabbana (the latest designer to launch eyewear). You can pay hundreds of pounds for a pair or you can pay a tenner; just make sure that they conform to BS 2724:1987, the British Standard that measures the degree of protection and distortion and the strength of the lens. Most sunglasses use CR39 lenses - a high standard lens which is among the best available for everyday use - and also make sure the lenses are big enough to shield your eyes - those teeny tiny oblong lenses may look great, but you'll still be squinting.
