Conceived to extend the life of the PS3 and to cement the console’s role as an entertainment hub, PlayTV is a kind of Freeview meets TV-recording service that Sky already does so well.

However, unlike its up market rival, PlayTV isn’t always as clever as you might like. True, it’s dinky and easy to use, but it works via a timer, so if the snooker’s moved the starting time of your favourite show, then you risk missing out. In terms of channels, PlayTV doesn’t offer anything more than the average Freeview box, so while it breathes new life into the PS3’s usability, many will wonder what the point of it is.
