The best-selling games of February 14-20 according to Steam, the online retail arm of video game company Valve, were topped by Alien vs Predator, a game featuring two of the most popular extra-terrestrial hunters of Hollywood's modern age.

Aliens vs Predator met with middling reviews amid a release schedule that has already seen Modern Warfare 2 conquer all before it and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 suck up any remaining time that fans of the first-person shooter have to spare.

So it seemed, as disappointed gamers vented their frustrations following Aliens vs Predator's supposedly underwhelming multiplayer demo.

However, as soon as Monday morning rolled around it was immediately apparent that the public at large had lapped it up, warts and all, for in the UK at least Aliens vs Predator was the most purchased of the week, a new release debuting in the top spot.

That UK retail chart did not include digital download sales, but it seems that worldwide users of the Steam service had stood by their convictions, unswayed by mixed word-of-mouth nor a full price of €49.99.

As it turns out, AvP's gameplay mechanics may be somewhat lacking, but that only serves to compound an intergalactic space marine's helplessness when thrown into a tense fight to the death with two of sci-fi's deadliest creatures.

Elsewhere in the chart, the THQ Complete Pack makes a re-appearance thanks to a special week-long offer that ran until February 19. The pack comprises 18 games which retail separately on the download service for a combined total of €270.

As a bundle they go for a cent under €100, but over the last week many had been taking advantage of the offer to get the package for half that at €49.99.

For their money, purchasers got access to Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War I and II, a great way to get up to speed with things in advance of Dawn of War II's expansion, Chaos Rising, set for release in March.

Also included were the Red Faction and Company of Heroes series, the Titan Quest games and the first post-apocalyptic survivalist STALKER game.

1) Aliens vs Predator

Chart positions reflect revenue gained by the Steam Network.
