Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare gets Christmas gaming number one

Last-minute promotion helped it shoot past Grand Theft Auto 5 and FIFA 15 and into the top spot

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was the coveted Christmas number one or video games, announced this morning, beating competition from FIFA 15 and Grand Theft Auto 5.

Grand Theft Auto 5 sold more on the PlayStation 4, but didn’t sell enough across other formats to beat CoD to the top spot, coming third overall. GTA on the PS4 was the best-selling title on any individual format.

CoD was helped out by a well-timed promotion on the PS4, according to GfK Chart-Track, which compiles the charts of video games. That helped it get out ahead of FIFA 15, which came second in the chart.

Sales of CoD were up 33 per cent this week. Sales of FIFA 15 were up 8 per cent — not enough to help it repeat its performance last year, when FIFA 14 sneaked ahead of Call of Duty: Ghosts at the last minute to come first in the Christmas charts.

Other last minute surges from games including Assassin’s Creed, sales of which were up 97% last week, weren’t enough to get them to the top. The full charts are below.
