It’s an extremely garish new look

Facebook has introduced colourful backgrounds for comments.

The option isn’t available to all users yet, but those who can access it say they can choose between a block colour and gradients.

It’s an extremely garish new look, and is unlikely to go down well with a great deal of people.

It was first spotted by Facebook user Evert Groot, who posted a screenshot of his “colour comments” to Twitter.

He added: "Colour comments really look hideous on Facebook."

I tracked the comments down on desktop and through the mobile app, and they showed up as regular comments – with a plain background – for me.

Whether or not Facebook rolls the feature out more widely remains to be seen, but this seems perfectly possible, even probable.

Facebook started testing colourful backgrounds for status updates towards the end of last year, and the option is now available to everyone.

As soon as you start typing a new status update, a variety of colour options automatically pop up.

If colourful backgrounds for comments become an official part of Facebook, the News Feed could quickly become incredibly messy and ugly - potentially even headache-inducing.
