Social media users were unable to use Facebook on the Android smartphones earlier, after the app suffered a glitch.

Live graphs published by Down Detector, a website which tracks the status of websites, suggested that over 1,500 users experienced an outage at around 5pm (BST).These statistics have not been verified by Facebook.

A Facebook spokesperson told The Independent: “Earlier today, some people using the Facebook Android app had trouble loading notifications and stories in News Feed due to a technical issue with one of our updates. We quickly worked to resolve the problem, and our system is 100 per cent back to normal. We apologise to those affected for the inconvenience.

Users took to rival website Twitter to air their frustratsions.

Meanwhile, others joked that the outage will give global productivity a boost, and will allow users the opportunity to prize themselves away from technology.
