It isn’t clear if Apple actually needs to take its store offline in order to make updates, but the move has become something of a ritual on the day of major announcements, as the company tries to build hype.

Tim Cook will unveil a trio of new smartphones tonight: the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

The latter is expected to be Apple's most advanced handset yet, with an edge-to-edge screen, wireless charging and a new camera, but reports suggest it could be difficult to buy due to manufacturing isssues.

Also on the cards tonight are a new Apple Watch and 4K Apple TV.

The highly anticipated launch event is set to kick off at 6pm BST, and is expected to go on for around two hours.

The Apple Store will come back online a short while after the show finishes, and will showcase all of the new products that are announced today.

By then, you should be able to pre-order them ahead of their release later this year.
