Sales tracking company VG Chartz are predicting that the multi-platform release of Modern Warfare 2 will become the fastest selling video game in history, with predicted worldwide sales of 6 to 7 million units during its first week of release.

Back in 2008 it was Grand Theft Auto IV, the magnum opus from Edinburgh-based Rockstar North, that shifted a record-breaking 5.9 million units during its first week of availability, but the latest game in the Call of Duty series looks set to break that with at least 4.5 million preorders due to be picked up from stores and mailboxes Tuesday, and more post-release sales to follow in the coming days.

Modern Warfare 2 is also part of a growing trend for big video game releases, with three distinct special editions of the core game available, including a glut of extra items ranging from a download of the original Call of Duty game, to a set of working night vision goggles.

The Mature / 18+ rated game itself has recieved extremely positive reviews, with videogames news site VG247.com publishing a summary of ratings and review aggregator Metacritic currently awarding it a status of 'Universal Acclaim,' averaging above 95 percent on Xbox 360, PC, and Playstation 3.

So in the space of just a few short weeks, Modern Warfare 2 may find itself being both the best-selling and highest rated video game of 2009.
