Samsung to launch child-friendly tablet: the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids

Rubberised casing and advanced Parental Controls will help keep both children and the tablet safe,

Although most of the tech world are currently getting excited about Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Gear smartwatch, the South Korean tech giant are also preparing to launch a new tablet aimed at children.

The Galaxy Tab 3 Kids won’t be the first touch-screen device aimed at children and it follows many established trends including a colourful plastic frame and a rugged, rubberised grip to help the tablet become a little bit more accident-proof.

Inside the hardware is basically the same as the Galaxy Tab 3 Grownups with a 7-inch, 1024 x 600 resolution screen. A 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage round out the key stats.

The big difference for the Kids appears to be a heavily-skinned version of Android that comes complete with a roster of friendly looking cartoon animals.

Samsung promise that the device comes pre-loaded with a range of educational and entertaining apps, and that there will be advanced parental settings including a Time Management feature to stop the little ones spending too much time on Dots.

“We saw an opportunity to create a device just for kids that provides them with an intuitive, fun and kid-friendly user experience filled with rich, interactive and educational content that parents will love,” says Samsung CEO JK Shin in an official press release.

The new tablet will also come with an “easy-to-grip” C Pen to allow for on-screen drawing that won’t “mark other objects”. Presumably this stylus, like the tablet itself, is a re-purposed take on old hardware – in this case the S pen.

The tablet will launch in South Korea in Septembers though there’s as of yet no word on future releases in other markets.
