Snapchat update: Huge petition calls on Snap to change back to old version of the app

The company hopes that the alterations allow it to make more money

A hugely popular petition is calling for Snapchat to reverse its controversial new update.

The app has undergone huge new changes in the new version of the app, which is rolling out internationally now. Many have said that it is clearly a downgrade – but the company has suggested people will get used to it and the change will never be reversed.

Now tens of thousands of people are asking them to take that back, and to revert to the app's old look. It notes that many are taking dramatic steps to avoid using the new app, and that it should just be reversed for everyone.

At the time of publication, 92,000 people have signed the petition, which is hosted on Change.org. But it is getting many more supporters every minute, and so is expected to go on to gain many more signatures.

"With the release of the new Snapchat update, many users have found that it has not made the app easier to use, but has in fact made many features more difficult," the petition reads. "There is a general level of annoyance among users and many have decided to use a VPN app to go back to the old Snapchat, as that’s how annoying this new update has become.

"Many ‘new features’ are useless or defeats the original purposes Snapchat has had for the past years. This petition aims to help convince Snap Inc. to change the app back to the basics, before this new 2018 update."

The company has spent much of the last couple of days tweeting from its official account to advise people they'll get used to the new change. But the real reason for the alterations is money – the company hopes that the updates to the way the app works can allow it to bring in more revenues, as it explained during an earnings call where it first set out its vision.
