The top free application by country* for the week, by number of downloads, recorded on April 12:

1. US
Vampires Live - 28 Loyalty Points (games)

Vampires Live is a massively multiplayer online game for the iPhone. Players compete against zombies and vampires earning points for each "attack." Points are used to purchase new sensory abilities, physical attributes and to acquire slaves. Players can recruit new members from the online network of more than 2.5 million players to join their clan and help them on their future missions.

2. UK
The Impossible Test (games)

The Impossible Test app is part test, part game. Players test their ability to decipher and interpret directions by following the onscreen instructions. The instructions tell you to do things like "touch the red light," "drag the circle into the non-square" and "answer the message." The best score is given to players who complete the instructions in the shortest given time without making a mistake.

3. France
Bouge ton Bob Lite (games)

Bouge ton Bob Lite ("SpongeBob Tickler Free" in English) puts a virtual SpongeBob in your pocket. Poke Bob in the eye and watch him blink, turn your screen to watch him slide around the bottom of the sea, or use two fingers to pinch him and make him stretch. Consumers can also change the background image.

4. Canada
Avatar Lite! (games)

Players step into the body of an Avatar and enter the fantasy world of Pandora in this action-adventure game made by Gameloft. The game inspires players to use their newfound Avatar body powers to travel throughout the foreign world - choosing to wage war against the native people of Na'vi, the land's flora and fauna, or to turn against the human race and obliterate the people who are trying to destroy the land. The game is set two decades before the Avatar film takes place and gives players a short preview of the full Avatar iPhone game.

5. Germany
Navigon select Telekom Edition (navigation)

Navigon select Telekom Edition is a free turn-by-turn navigation app for German T-Mobile customers. The application provides directions for both in-car and pedestrian navigation and the latest NAVTEQ maps of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The free version includes local search, audio directions, day and night modes, a "Reality View" which lets you see a graphical representation of highway junctions and crossings, plus enhanced pedestrian navigation.

6. Australia
The Impossible Test (games)

See "The Impossible Test."

7. Japan
??? (reference)

??? ("Eijiro" in English) is a web-based Japanese-English, English-Japanese word reference application from Eijiro, one of the most popular Japanese-English dictionaries on the internet. Users can search for word definitions, but will also find real life examples of the words in context, making it a much more valuable resource than a Japanese-English dictionary that just translates literally. An internet connection is required to use the app.

8. Italy
All in One Camera Free (Utility)

All in One Camera Free is a photographic application that enhances the limited features of the iPhone's existing camera. With the application users can perfectly frame their subject with onscreen ruler guides, enlarge the shot area with a digital zoom, activate shots with voice commands, take up to three shots continuously, reduce the occurrence of blurry photos with the app's "anti-shake" function, press anywhere on the screen to take a picture, and take better pictures at night with the night mode.

9. China
Avatar Lite! (games)

10. Netherlands
ABN AMRO Saldo (finance)

ABN AMRO Saldo (or "ABN AMRO Balance" in English) lets you check your ABN AMRO bank account balance while you are on the go. The application provides free and ‘secure' access to savings account balances. In the future the developer hopes to add a transaction history and mobile payments.

(*The countries listed are those markets in which the most iPhones and iPod Touches have been sold worldwide. The list of top ten countries is based on AdMob's November 2009 estimate of the worldwide iPhone and iPod touch User Distribution.)
